Dellery cosmetic(?!) vaginal douche powder (customer sample)
Tampax [menstrual tampons] Incorporated, U.S.A. (1950s-1960s?)

Through much of the 20th century many companies in America sold equipment for squirting liquids up the vagina. One of the main reasons was to eliminate the odor thought to poison marriages and physically close relationships. Americans - who knows why? - seemed and seem to regard any body odor as repellent.

Other reasons were to kill sperm and to heal a sick vagina.

But as you probably know indiscriminate flushing of the vagina reduces the millions of bacteria and normal fluids that keep the normal vagina healthy (more). (Read 1930s criticism of Zonite and Lysol douche liquids.)

Tampax, present at the birth of the menstrual tampon, added its liquid treatment with Dellery, possibly in the 1950s or 1960s judging from the appearance of the type.

In the most detailed statement I've ever seen on such products, Tampax educated its customers with possibly too much science; I wonder if the readers of the instructions understood the rationale. But Tampax seemed to be hyperalert to the dangers of douching and to the necessity of keeping the vagina acidic.

By doing so it narrowed the purpose of the fluid's action to "cleansing" - "cosmetic" - probably meaning elimination of odor and harmless discharge while retaining the conditions for keeping the user's vagina in tip-top shape.

Whether this justified offering women yet another douching solution, I don't know.

I thank Procter & Gamble for donating the packages and literature!
