MUSEUM OF MENSTRUATION AND WOMEN'S HEALTH

Rating American menstrual pads and tampons for absorption in 1949 (Consumer Reports, selections)
Page 1

The influential and valuable American magazine Consumer Reports helped women pick menstrual pads and tampons as far as absorbency was concerned in this 1949 issue. For comfort, often a problem with menstrual products, it advised women to try different products; comfort was hard to put in numbers since it would vary from women to woman and maybe period to period - or hour to hour.

And Macy's and Bloomingdale's department stores had their own brands (see the last page)!

I thank Tambrands, the former maker of Tampax tampons, for giving me this photocopy!

Below: Title page. Comments on the pictures and text: See the first Kotex magazine ad and
the famous and long-running Modess . . . . because series.
Contrary to the text, women have probably made tampons for themselves for a long time,
and these instructions attest to that.
See early American tampons, Wix and Tampax. Read the famous Dickinson report
about how much better tampons were than pads (1945).
OPA means "Office of Price Administration."
See some brands mentioned: Venus traveling package, Curads, Fibs and Wix.
