MUSEUM OF MENSTRUATION AND WOMEN'S HEALTH
Kotex menstrual napkin ad, July 1923, The American Girl magazine (for
Girl Scouts)
It's surprising that Kotex, which had started selling its menstrual
pads in 1920, placed these two adult-looking ads in The American Girl magazine,
published for Girl Scouts. The only concession in the text I can find to
girls are the words "young women" in the July issue (below). Both
ads feature women at least in their late teens, at least as far as I can
determine. But clothing of the time could be deceiving me. But see an adult-looking
"girl" on the cover of a Kotex Marjorie
May booklet.
Menarche did occur a bit earlier in 1923
but I don't think by enough to account for the difference. Kotex probably
had not yet fine-tuned its advertising to girls yet.
This is not the American Girl magazine of today, by the way.
See more about the pad dispenser mentioned
in the ad and see a wrapped pad for dispensers
probably from the 1930s.
