MUSEUM OF MENSTRUATION AND WOMEN'S HEALTH
Kotex menstrual napkin ad, August, 1923, The American Girl magazine
(for Girl Scouts)
Old time America! I can almost smell the air - and the horse - in the
evocative drawing, which looks like a stage set.
It's surprising that Kotex, which had started selling its menstrual
pads in 1920, placed this two adult-looking ad in The American Girl magazine,
published for Girl Scouts. The only concession in the text I can find to
girls are the words "young women" in the July issue (here). Both ads feature women at least in their late teens,
at least as far as I can determine. But clothing of the time could be deceiving
me. But see an adult-looking "girl" on the cover of a Kotex Marjorie May booklet.
Menarche did occur a bit earlier in 1923
but I don't think by enough to account for the difference. Kotex probably
had not yet fine-tuned its advertising to girls yet.
This is not the American Girl magazine of today, by the way.
See more about the pad dispenser mentioned
in the ad and see a wrapped pad for dispensers
probably from the 1930s.
