Relax!
Close your eyes for three
minutes! Follow your
breathing! Good.
Now open your eyes.
Buy into this obvious (to me)
picture of what this booklet is
about: it's about SPERM!
Did you jump when I said
that? Sorry.
Remember that this booklet
wasn't allowed to mention that
horrible word, only hint.
But look below, children, at
what the clever Lanteen artist
drew: three
lilies shaped much like
sperms. Lilies are associated both
with marriage and death -
part of the name of this booklet
and the death of the sperm!
And just to make sure you
don't miss the connection the
words "man" and "husband"
are glued to the unfortunate
germ (see below), er, sperm.
Whew,
that should do it! If I
weren't so excited I'd take a
nap.

Below:
Pp. 2-3. "Germ"
(right-hand page) is an
old-fashioned although
proper word for sperm
(never mentioned here); think of
the germination of plants.
Today the average person uses it
to mean harmful
bacteria and viruses;
and see an American ad from 1914
using that long-standing meaning.
This
ambiguity was ingenious
since birth control (which was
illegal in 1942
if not prescribed by doctors to
married women, not single) by
diaphragms
and douching is never described
here, only the stopping of
"germs."
