MUSEUM OF MENSTRUATION AND WOMEN'S HEALTH

German menstrual pads, 1908-1990s
from an exhibition catalog

Women probably made their own pads, belts, tampons and sponges for millenia before being able to buy them in stores - when they didn't just bleed into their clothing, a fact that shocks some people.

A German exhibit in the 1990s showed many German menstrual products, as you see below and on the following pages.

German patterns for making pads and belts, about 1900
This illustration comes from "Menstruation: Monatshygiene im Wandel von 1900 bis heute," (Menstruation: Changing Menstrual Hygiene from 1900 to Today) the catalog of the exhibition at the Lorsch branch of the Hessian State Museum in Darmstadt, Germany, that occurred from 26 November 1998 to 31 July 1999.

Below: The illustration originally appeared in Anna Fischer-Dückelmann's
"Die Frau als Hausärztin," [The Woman as Home Doctor) Munich, 1908.
It shows how to make a pad and belt.
My translation:
Fig. 152. The stretched-out (twice) pad with openings at two corners.
Fig. 153. The invagination (tucking in) of the two othet corners. [Invagination
sounds so right for the subject.]
Fig. 154. The completed pad [with belt]
