MUSEUM OF MENSTRUATION AND WOMEN'S HEALTH

Meds menstrual tampons, junior size
The Modess tampon

(1940s-50s?, Personal Products Corp., U.S.A.)

Introduction & first page.

I thank Procter & Gamble for donating the box!
Below: Left: The wrapper on the intact tampon
looks like yellow glassine.
Middle: The 'pon revealed! It extends 5 1/4" (13 cm). The
string came tucked into the tube.
Right: The plunger (narrow, inner tube at left) measures 3 x 3/8" (7.6 x 0.8 cm);
the outer, larger tube (center) 3 x 1/2" (7.6 x 1.2 cm);
the cotton plug 2 1/8 x 7/16" (5.2 x 1.1 cm);
and the string about 3 1/2" (about 9 cm).
Now, I know you're bouncing up and down on your chair
shouting, "Mr. MUM, the little tube is MUCH
smaller than the big one so how can the little tube stay in
the big one without wobbling around?! The
OTHER tampons
fit snugly!
" You ARE smacking your forehead about this
seeming inconsistency, right? Right?? Wake up!
Well, little ones, your MUM thinks of everything. Just glance
at the cool diagram below these pictures.

Below: Left: The string end of the BIG TUBE has a fat margin formed by folding the cardboard under:
it embraces (so to write) the smaller tube.
Right: The cotton plug end has NO MARGIN, allowing the plug to
eject into you know where. The red lines show the difference in opening size.
I say, these fellows (most of the menstrual industry was peopled with men, of course)
were brilliant!
Below: The ends of the smaller tube are identical.
