The Art of Menstruation at the Museum of Menstruation and Women's Health

 "Altar"
1995
Applique and embroidery
110 x 156 cm (43.3" x 61.4")
Art copyright 1995 Mayra Alpízar

                                                    Mayra.

Here's how Babel Fish translates it with some of my tweaking and the kind help of an e-mailer:

Hello, my name is Mayra Alpízar. I am a Cuban textile artist and have been for many years. I discovered your museum site very recently and it seems to me fantastic, extraordinary and gorgeous the existence of a place like that [music to my ears, er, eyes - whatever!). I write very little and badly in English, for that reason I do it in Spanish so please excuse me.

The works that are attached are: Title: "Altar." 1995 Technique: Applique and embroidery. Dimensions:110x156 cm.

Title: "Quipu of fertility." 2004 Technique: Knotted ribbons with carved and colored wood. Dimensions: 37x94 cm.

When I stopped menstruating I felt much nostalgia and sadness. I believe that happens to all women. We know that we are no longer fertile and that we closed that beautiful cycle of life - it was then that I conceived this work. "I asked a friend who is very organized and younger than I if she would lend me her menstrual calendar for that year, and she loved it when I told her what I would be using it for." "I would like it a lot if these works could be part of the collection. Greetings and much luck with so timely a project."
Mayra.
